Equine osteoarthritis and the use of regenerative therapies

Abstract
Osteoarthritis is a disease that affects the horse’s joints, causing degeneration of the joint cartilage, in addition to changes in adjacent tissues and bones, leading to a painful condition. To obtain the final diagnosis, a careful anamnesis, a detailed examination of the locomotor system and imaging tests including radiography and ultrasound, are essential. Currently, therapeutic options capable of stimulate the regeneration of joint tissue, with better acceptance by the animal, acceptance which is not often observed in conventional therapies, where there is a high rate of negative side effects. The regenerative therapies that will be addressed in this review are: platelet-rich plasma, autologous conditioned serum and mesenchymal stem cells, all of which have positive results in treating joint injuries. In this context, the objective of this article is to research studies on regenerative methods of treating osteoarthritis in horses, therapies currently considered promising in the medical clinic.
