Abstract

Escherichia coli is an important pathogen for human and veterinary medicine because the microorganism is associated with many health disorders caused by intestinal (EPEC, ETEC, EIEC, EHEC and EAggEC) and extraintestinal pathotypes (ExPEC). The genetic similarity between avian pathogenic E. coli (APEC) and strains associated with urinary tract infections (UPEC), meningitis and human sepsis (MENEC) became the target of research in recent years, revealing a health concern in poultry production. Besides the hypothesis about the zoonotic potential of avian strains, is growing worldwide concern about the increase of antimicrobial resistance among Enterobacteria. This paper makes a review of the subject, highlighting the health risks associated with APEC.
