Abstract

Sepsis is recognized as a major cause of mortality and high
costs in intensive care units around the world. There are several
changes that gastroenteritis, especially that caused by parvovirus,
can cause in the physiological parameters of patients affected,
such that the hematological and biochemical profiles, as well as
in hemodynamics, observed most often in cases of severe sepsis
and septic shock. This study aimed to evaluate the frequency
of SIRS, sepsis, severe sepsis and septic shock in 50 dogs with
gastroenteritis treated in the emergency room, and later required
hospitalization for intensive care. Only 10% of patients did
not fit into any of the classifications, and about the rest, the
greater frequency was of severe sepsis, since 66% of patients
were classified in this category. With the obtained results, it is
concluded that there are several physiological and metabolic
changes that occur in dogs with gastroenteritis, leading them
to systemic inflammatory conditions, infectious or not, and
aggravated by organ dysfunction.
