Abstract

The objective of this study was to evaluate the side effects of the use of iopamidol and iohexol inmyelography, with and without cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) removal. Twenty-four healthy female dogs, with an average weight of 15 kg, were studied. Methotrimeprazine was used to sedate the dogs; thiopental to induce anesthesia. The subarachnoid space was tapped through the atlanto-occipitalspace with a 30 x 8 needle and a 0.3 ml volume of contrast injected. The dogs were randomly divided into four groups: GI (without CSF removal, iopamidol was used); G2 (with CSF removal, iopamidol was used); G3 (without CSF removal, iohexol was used); G 4 (with CSF removal, iohexol was used). Involuntary limb and head movements, tonic-c1onic contractions, muscular rigidity, vocalization, salivation, mydriasis and seizures were recorded. A66.66% incidence of seizures was found in G1and G2. It was also found that time between the administration of contrast and onset of neurological symptoms was shorter in G1.
