Abstract

Glanders was considered to be an exotic disease in Brazil until the official report of several cases in the Zona da Mata area in the Northeast. Confirmation was based on bacterial isolation and serological tests (complement fixation). Surveys in the affected region indicate that glanders has been present over the years, killing animals, although no official reports were made in 30 years (1969 to 1999). The disease remained in the region as a result of local management practices associated with the climate conditions, high humidity and temperatures. The difficulty to obtain adequate material for isolation can account for the absence of diagnosis. The authors emphasize that glanders is a zoonosis with high impact on public health, and the disease can go undiagnosed because physicians lack general knowledge about glanders, diagnosing it as some other infectious disease.
