Abstract

It is presented a review of bovine brucellosis: definition, etiology, pathogenesis and epidemiology with the discussion of the main points that affect it’s transmission and spread. After this, it is presented the Brazilian National Control and Eradication of Brucellosis and Tuberculosis Program that was started in 2001. In this program, it was performed a diagnosis of the situation with the participation of the Agriculture Ministry and the Universities of Brasilia and São Paulo. The epidemiological situation of the disease was obtained by a serological survey performed in 14 Brazilian states. To achieve a better epidemiological level of information, 13 states were divided in a total of 60 divisions according to the specific conditions of the cattle production. The blood samples were collected from adult females from 2001 to 2004. It was presented the prevalence found for positive farms animals and their risk factors according to the state (Bahia, Espírito Santo, Minas Gerais, Mato Grosso, Paraná, Rio de Janeiro, Rondônia, Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina, Sergipe, São Paulo e Tocantins) and each special epidemiological division inside the state.
