Abstract

Rabies is a zoonosis transmitted by direct contact with animals infected with rabies virus of the genus Lyssavirus. It occurs in more than 150 countries, 84% of the cases are in rural zone. It's an underestimated preventable disease and the mass vaccination of dogs is a key point to the success of programs for control and elimination of rabies. Considering the importance of holding canine and rabies vaccination campaign and the obstacle that the municipalities face to obtain of vaccination coverage equal or greater than 80% for dogs and 70% for cats, the present study was developed to investigate, who are the people, structures and resources involved in the achievement of this coverage, in the region of São José do Rio Preto, São Paulo State, Brazil (Epidemiological surveillance group - GVE 29 – SJRP). Questionnaire was elaborated and sent to the municipalities. It has been found that it necessary to create specific staffs to work with zoonosis and remuneration. It is also necessary the participation of a veterinarian throughout the campaign.
