Importance of strategic points in winged insects of the species Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus production in Araçatuba, São Paulo, Brazil

Abstract

Currently, dengue is the arbovirus with highest incidence in Brazil and is, virtually, in 100% of the national territory. With the arrival of two new diseases: chikungunya and zika virus, the concern is higher because both are also transmitted by infected Aedes aegypti. In urban environment, there are sites in which surveillance and control organs are dedicated in a special way, named strategic points (PE). We evaluated the contribution of each PE type in the production of winged insects in priority municipalities of Araçatuba region, state of São Paulo, Brazil – Araçatuba, Andradina, Birigui and Penápolis – during 2014 and 2015. In many PE, Andradina positivity was above 50%. In Birigui, in 2014, the highest positivity was found in tire repair shops. In the cities of Andradina, Araçatuba and Penápolis deposits of recycling materials, junkyards and car disassemblers presented increased occurrence of positivity from 2014 to 2015. In both investigated years the higher percentage of winged insects captured was found inside houses. As new diseases were linked to this vector, knowing PE dynamics is relevant for surveillance and control of the proliferation and dispersion of these insects. As the frequency of positivity is variable between the different PE, control activities should be adequate to each situation and the reality of each city.
