Abstract

Hypospadias is a congenital anomaly of the external genitalia, in which the penile urethra ends ventrally and caudally at its normal opening. It can be classified based on the location of the urethral opening as glandular, penile, scrotal, perineal, or anal. The affected animals have other congenital or developmental abnormalities. This article is a case report of a rare perineal hypospadias in a 5-months-old, mixed-breed male dog, and it broaches the clinical and therapeutic aspects and also the requested tests. A dog with assumed hermaphrodite condition received medical care at Hospital Veterinário da Universidade Anhembi Morumbi. During physical examination, urethral meatus located ventrally to the anus, foreskin alterations, penis, and absence of scrotum, as well as coccygeal vertebrae malformation, were observed. Screening tests were performed, such as blood count, abdominal ultrasonography, and thoracolumbar and sacral loins radiographs. The dog received surgical treatment which consisted in penectomy and orchiectomy. The animal received antibiotic, analgesic, and anti-inflammatory medication, daily cleaning of stitches and perineal region and showed excellent postoperative recovery. Fifteen days after the surgery, the patient returned to the hospital and the surgical wound was completely healed, with no signs of urinary infection, inflammation or rashes on perineal region. Defective external genitalia removal was chosen to avoid infection and/or inflammation and to improve the patient’s quality of life.
