Abstract

Equine alphaherpesvirus is a wide range of viruses known for causing severe risk to horse health. Abortion and equine alphaherpesvirus myeloencephalopaty are the most serious clinical consequences of infection. Recently, there was a relevant increase in the incidence of the neurological disease, severely affecting horses and the horse business. Latency and reactivation are critical features of the epidemiology of alphaherpesvirus infection. Vaccines should be used to reduce virus spreading and duration of viremia. Currently, commercially available vaccines should be used to reduce virus dissemination and infection. Current vaccines don’t prevent the neurological disease in horses. Proper biosecurity care must be taken on all properties. Outbreak prevention and a contingency plan should be discussed by cultural and sporting horse activities authorities throughout the country.
