Abstract

Objective: To review and analyze the treatment alternatives for cruciate ligament rupture in dogs. Data Sources: CAB and MEDLINE databases, retrospective period of./O years. Data Synthesis: Conservative and surgical treatments are both mentioned. The surgical techniques described are classified as intracapsular and extracapslllar procedures. While in the first ones the ruptured figment is replaced With autogenously grafts OI' synthetic material, the latter ones involve stretching of the periarticular tissues to restore joint stability.lnmany cases, the medial meniscus is damaged as a result of the craniocaudal tibial drawer motion. None of the surgical techniques described consistently stops the progression of degenerative joint disease. Conclusions: According the papers reviewed, there isn ~ a consensus about the best surgical procedure for treatment of cranial cruciate figment rupture. Hence, one should be familiar with the anatomy, function. and mechanics of the cranial cruciate ligament, as well as with the principles of the techniques described, in order to select the best approach for each individual case.
