Abstract

In May 2001, a survey on animal health was conducted in 162 farms in Botucatu, state of S. Paulo. The evaluated aspects were level of knowledge about the disease and how it is acquired by farm owners and employees; who provides the information about vaccination technique and how the information is provided; the type of technical assistance available to farms; the schooling of farm owners and employees; the kind of employees and the time the farm owners have been practicing this activity. The results of the survey revealed that it is the owners' lack of education, rather than the mechanical procedure itself, which interferes with the vaccination's efficiency. Thus, it is important for veterinary medicine schools to adopt a comprehensive continued education program for farmers and employees. A committee coordinated by a veterinarian, with the full support of government organizations should be created. The State Department of Agriculture should be responsible for animal health control activities. Farmers who act in accordance with the legislation and the global market requirements will be able to eradicate the foot-and-mouth disease. The vaccination-free status can then be achieved, adding value to the products of the state of São Paulo.
