Abstract

Ionophores are antibiotics that are sometimes added to cattle and poultry feed, improving feed efficiency
and growth rate, The ionophores currently approved for use are safe at the prescribed levels for
the indicated species, Feed containing ionophores are dangerous for horses because they are more
sensitive to ionophore toxicity than other species and can lead to sudden death. In this paper we will
discuss the ionophore toxicity for horses, pathogenesis, clinical signs, pathology findings, diagnosis
and treatment,
