Abstract

There is a high incidence of jugular thrombophlebitis in horses, and is often associated with injections given incorrectly, large volume of drugs, chemical irritation, catheterization, serial vein puncture and animal predisposition. The inflammatory process often results in pharyngeal and facial oedema, local pain, vein distension, occasional local infection, reduced venous return and the animal can eventually die as a result of the thrombophlebitis. The objectives of the treatment are to restore the vessel function and to reduce inflammation.
