Abstract

Antimicrobial prophylaxis is routinely applied in veterinary surgery. However, there are specific conditions for this use in order to prevent the occurrence of surgical site infection and the selection of multidrug-resistant bacteria. This review aimed to address important concepts on the topic according to the latest scientific publications on veterinary and human medicine, and help veterinarians’ surgeons in rational decision-making to the antimicrobial protocol applied in surgical patients. Thus, we not only aim at the success of treatments, but also at reducing the selection and spread of multidrug-resistant bacteria in the context of One Health.
