Abstract

Epilepsy is one of the most prevalent neurological diseases in dogs, and it’s a chronic condition of recurrent epileptic seizures. Although there are several drugs available, many patients suffer their toxic effects or do not obtain the desired control oh seizures. For such patients, the use of the Cannabis sativa plant becomes a valuable treatment alternative. Studies have shown that the pharmacological combination between cannabidiol and tetrahydrocannabinol is the best option for the treatment of epileptic seizures with virtually no deleterious effects and efficient therapeutic response. This paper revised the pathophysiology of epilepsy and how Cannabis sativa acts to control this disorder. It was concluded that this plant may an excellent treatment option for animals that are unable to reduce the the frequency, the duration or severity of the seizure with the available drugs, so regularization and easy access to the commercialization of the substance is urgent.
