Surgical treatment of idiopathic stringhalt in a horse: Case report

Abstract

Stringhalt is an abnormality characterized by involuntary hyperflexion of one or both equine hindlimb, it is a lameness of different intensity and frequency, varyning from mild to severe. This disease has no defined etiology, it is classified as Australian stringhalt or classic/idiopathic stringhalt, in both clinical sings are similar, the first one differs from the second by severity, outbreak occurrence and spontaneous recovery of the affected animals. Treatment can be by medication, auxiliary therapies or surgical intervention. The prognosis is guarded to favorable, it is depends according to the animal clinical condition. This study describes a case of idiopathic stringhalt focusing on report the disease, clinical sings and treatment.
