Traditional Chinese Medicine in the treatment of lymphoplasmacytic hepatitis in a dog: case report

Abstract

Lymphoplasmacytic hepatitis is characterized as an inflammatory process affecting the liver and intrahepatic bile ducts. According to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the Liver is part of the Wood element, and is responsible for the smooth flow of Qi (Vital Energy). When the body becames imbalanced, pathogens such as Heat-Dampness can develop, as the smooth flow of Qi is essential for the proper functioning of the Zang-Fu organs, particularly the Spleen-Pancreas and Stomach. This case report aims to describe the is diagnosis and treatment of a dog affected by Lymphoplasmacytic Hepatitis through MTC. An eleven-year-old Lhasa Apso dog was presented with jaundice, abdominal pain and anorexia. Clinical and surgical treatments were performed, demonstrating little significant improvement. Through the vision of Oriental Medicine, the patient presented Liver in disharmony, resulting in a Damp-Heat pattern. Weekly acupuncture sessions and administration of tradicional Chinese herbal formulas were implemented as part of the treatment strategy.
