Abstract

Mycoplasma pulmonis is the primary etiologic agent of murine respiratory mycoplasmosis (MRM), an important pathology in laboratory rats. Rats have been considered fundamental tools in experimental research for a long time and over the years it has been possible to observe an increasing number of rats being treated as pets and their increasing presence in veterinary clinics. MRM is a chronic pathology and is often subclinical. Its progression is mainly associated with inadequate management, emphasizing the importance of knowledge about the aspects of MRM in rats, being fundamental for the healthy coexistence of these animals and their owners besides being an important tool for obtaining reliable experimental results.
